President and Owner of Healthcare Management Solutions, LLC, Leah Heimbach, talked with Jim Matuga, host of the Positively West Virginia Podcast, about her business during COVID-19, her growth in the past few months and her advice to young entrepreneurs.

What is your 30-second pitch for HMS?

“We are not just a company; we are a cause. We do everything we can to protect vulnerable populations, along with veterans. August will be our eighteen-month anniversary, and because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are on the front lines protecting those populations,” said Heimbach.

What are things like for your business right now?

“The number one thing we are doing right is protecting our staff. We have the survey staff that goes out and does the inspections, but it is hard to get personal protective equipment. We spend many hours getting this equipment, and we have been fortunate to get a good amount of it, but we have to source it continually,” said Heimbach.

What is a leadership lesson you have learned through dealing with the pandemic?

“I learned that the number one priority is to take care of your staff because they are going on-site in hot spots, and they know they are putting themselves at risk. Listening to these employees’ concerns and letting them know I am going to support them is what I have learned a lot more about,” said Heimbach.

Can you give us some insight into some tactics you employed due to COVID-19?

“The number one tactic I used was trying to get as much information as possible; keeping in mind that we have to know the information for each governor and county. I stay informed and make sure the people who work in that service division of HMS, LLC, are communicated with frequently,” said Heimbach.
