Growing West Virginia’s Green Industry: The Story of Julie Robinson and Michael Biafore

This week on Positively West Virginia, we’re diving into the vibrant world of landscaping, horticulture, and outdoor living with two passionate advocates for the green industry: Julie Robinson, Executive Director of the West Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association (WVNLA), and Michael Biafore, co-owner of Biafore Landscape Development.

The Mission of the WV Nursery and Landscape Association

Julie Robinson leads WVNLA, a nonprofit professional trade association that supports nursery and landscape professionals across the Mountain State. Based in Charleston and celebrating its 85th year, WVNLA provides:

  • Certification and education programs

  • Scholarships for students
  • Advocacy and lobbying efforts
  • Industry promotion and marketing

What started in 1939 as the West Virginia Nurserymen’s Association has evolved to represent a wide range of green industry professionals—landscapers, designers, horticulturists, and more.

Julie is quick to point out that the green industry is much broader than many people realize. It’s a field that combines science, construction, design, and art. From installing irrigation systems and building patios to maintaining public spaces and creating outdoor living areas, professionals in this industry do far more than just plant flowers or mow lawns.

“There really is something for everyone in this profession,” Julie explains. Whether you’re into chemistry, business, construction, or design, the green industry offers a wide range of opportunities.

A Family Legacy in Landscaping: Biafore Landscape Development

Michael Biafore’s story is one of tradition, passion, and West Virginia pride. His family business, Biafore Landscape Development, began in 1963, but its roots trace back even further to the 1940s and ‘50s when his father and uncle were working in the field. Today, Michael and his brother continue that legacy, having returned to West Virginia in the late ’90s to grow the business and provide jobs.

The company offers full-service landscaping, from design and construction to maintenance. Michael’s team builds outdoor spaces like patios, driveways, and outdoor kitchens, with a focus on improving homeowners’ quality of life.

The Impact of Outdoor Living Spaces

“COVID really changed how people see their homes,” Michael says. “People started investing more in their own backyards.” With more people staying home, there was a greater demand for creating outdoor areas where families could relax, entertain, and unwind.

From lighting and irrigation to hardscaping and turf, these spaces don’t just add beauty—they create functionality and value.

Michael describes the work as designing outdoor “rooms,” with walls, floors, and ceilings made from natural materials and plants. “We’re kind of like architects for the outside,” he adds.

Promoting the Profession and Attracting Future Talent

Julie and Michael are both passionate about promoting the green industry and educating the public about its value. One major initiative is WVNLA’s scholarship program.

In 2023, the association awarded $35,000 in scholarships, including five $5,000 Marcus W. Rennix Scholarships. These are awarded to West Virginia natives studying fields like landscape architecture, horticulture, or greenhouse management.

One of the biggest wins for WVNLA recently? Helping to preserve WVU’s Landscape Architecture program, which was at risk during statewide budget cuts. Julie says, “Our members were appalled at the idea of losing the only accredited landscape architecture program in the state. We knew we had to act.”

The Green Industry’s Role in Quality of Life

Whether it’s a well-manicured college campus, a public park, or your front yard, landscaping influences how we feel about the spaces we occupy.

“A beautiful outdoor space is inviting—it makes people want to be there,” Michael says. And he’s right. From curb appeal to environmental stewardship, the green industry plays a key role in the fabric of our communities.

Conclusion: A Thriving Future for WV’s Green Industry

Thanks to leaders like Julie Robinson and Michael Biafore, West Virginia’s green industry continues to thrive. Through education, advocacy, and a strong network of professionals, the WV Nursery and Landscape Association is sowing the seeds for future growth.
