Hope Gas: Reviving a Legacy and Powering West Virginia’s Future

Leadership and Vision at Hope Gas

In a recent episode of Positively West Virginia, Morgan O’Brien, the President and CEO of Hope Gas, shared insights into his leadership philosophy and the company’s mission. According to Morgan, effective leadership is not about having all the answers but about listening and empowering employees to excel. “You’re only as good as the people that work for you,” he emphasized. For Morgan, leadership is about fostering growth and creating a shared vision rather than focusing solely on personal goals.

A Storied Past and a Promising Future

Hope Gas boasts a rich 125-year history in West Virginia. Despite undergoing ownership changes over the years, its recent rebranding and return to its original name marked a significant milestone. Morgan recounted the symbolic relaunch of Hope Gas, coinciding with the revival of the Backyard Brawl football game between Pitt and West Virginia. The celebration included a tailgate party and a unified march into the stadium, embodying the pride and legacy of the company.

This rebranding not only honored Hope Gas’s heritage but also reignited a sense of identity among employees and the community. “It was about bringing back the name and the pride associated with it,” Morgan explained.

Growth and Expansion

Since taking ownership two years ago, Morgan and his team have expanded Hope Gas’s footprint to 38 of West Virginia’s 55 counties, serving approximately 140,000 families. With over 7,000 miles of pipeline, Hope Gas plays a vital role in distributing energy across the state. The company has also added 250 jobs, increasing its workforce to 550 employees. These family-sustaining jobs underscore Hope Gas’s commitment to driving economic growth and providing opportunities within the state.

West Virginia’s Energy Advantage

West Virginia’s abundant natural gas reserves make it an ideal location for Hope Gas. Morgan emphasized the state’s potential to attract new businesses in manufacturing, technology, and artificial intelligence. He sees Hope Gas as a key player in positioning West Virginia as a hub for energy and innovation.

Morgan also highlighted the environmental stewardship deeply rooted in West Virginian culture. “People here are true environmentalists,” he said, noting their dedication to preserving land, water, and air quality. This mindset aligns with Hope Gas’s mission to deliver energy responsibly while protecting natural resources.

Building a Workforce for the Future

Hope Gas’s success depends on its people, and Morgan sees himself as a “cheerleader” who inspires employees to become the best versions of themselves. By painting a vision of what could be and empowering his team to achieve it, Morgan fosters a culture of growth and innovation.

Morgan also emphasized the importance of retaining young talent in West Virginia. He encouraged young people to consider careers in the energy industry and explore entrepreneurial ventures that could complement Hope Gas’s services.
