Empowering Sustainability: Erin Cunningham and Recycle Balls’ Move to West Virginia

When Erin Cunningham, the Executive Director of Recycle Balls, decided to relocate her non-profit from Vermont to Bealington, West Virginia, it was more than just a geographical shift; it marked a new chapter in her mission to make a positive environmental impact. Recycle Balls is dedicated to recycling tennis balls into sustainable products, offering innovative solutions that contribute to both the environment and local communities.

A New Beginning in West Virginia

In January, Recycle Balls moved its corporate operations to Bealington, West Virginia, bringing jobs and a fresh perspective on sustainability to the region. “The welcoming community in Barbara County has been incredible,” Erin says, “and it’s filled with problem solvers who take initiative.” The local workforce’s ingenuity and hard work were key to overcoming the logistical challenges of relocating a one-of-a-kind machine used to separate the rubber from the felt in recycled tennis balls.

Erin recalls the effort and excitement of Jim, Truman, and Wayne, who tackled the task of assembling the machine despite its unconventional assembly—no plans, just the determination to figure it out. “These are the people I want to work with,” Erin shares, emphasizing the area’s welcoming attitude and readiness to embrace new opportunities.”

Green Gold: A Revolutionary Product for Equestrians

One of Recycle Balls’ standout innovations is Green Gold—a product created from recycled tennis ball materials specifically for equestrian arenas. This arena footing combines natural rubber and felt to enhance horse riding surfaces, offering numerous benefits. The rubber reduces compaction, which is beneficial for horses’ legs, and improves the cushion and rebound, leading to fewer injuries. The felt, which consists of a blend of nylon and wool, helps retain moisture and maintain the surface integrity of the arena. This not only makes for happier, healthier horses but also supports sustainable practices by reusing materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

“The development of Green Gold came about from listening to equestrians in Vermont who were struggling with poor footing in their arenas,” Erin explains. “One horsewoman, Suki, approached us with a problem and together we developed a solution. It’s now a product that resonates with horse owners not only for its environmental impact but for the improved experience it offers their animals.”

Breaking Barriers with Innovation

The recognition of Recycle Balls’ innovative efforts was highlighted when the non-profit won a spot in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Innovation and Circularity program. This award acknowledges the organization’s commitment to creative solutions for reusing materials before they are recycled. Erin credits the local Bealington community and her team for their dedication to problem-solving and adaptability, making Recycle Balls a leader in sustainability. “We are excited to be bringing this recognition to West Virginia,” she notes. “It’s not just about recycling tennis balls but also about creating opportunities for innovation within the community.”

An Open Invitation

Erin is enthusiastic about the open house event on July 12th at Recycle Balls’ new Bealington facility. The community is invited to tour the warehouse, see the Green Gold product in action, and learn about the innovative processes that Recycle Balls uses. “We want people to see firsthand what we do and how their involvement can make a difference,” Erin says. “It’s about connecting with the community and showing them the impact of recycling tennis balls on our environment.”

Advice for Entrepreneurs Considering West Virginia

Erin encourages other entrepreneurs considering relocation to West Virginia to take the leap. “The support from the Economic Development Authority and the welcoming nature of the community here has been incredible. We wouldn’t be here without it,” she shares. “If you’re looking to move your business, reach out, and they can help guide you through the process. It’s a wonderful place to start a new chapter.”

Erin Cunningham and Recycle Balls are not just leaders in environmental sustainability but also exemplify the power of community collaboration and innovative thinking. Their move to West Virginia marks the beginning of a new journey, not just for their non-profit but for the local community as well, fostering a sustainable future one recycled tennis ball at a time.
