Evans Knob Farm is owned and operated by Kathy and Reid Evans, fourth-generation farmers of the Evans’ family farm, who took ownership of the property in 1994. After employment cuts made by IBM in 2002, Reid was let go by the company. It was then that Kathy recommended transforming the property from a personal garden to a commercial farm.

The Evans’ are a resilient bunch. With the spousal couple as the only full-time employees on the payroll, “every day is a busy day on the farm,” laughed Kathy.

The saying around the farm is “Where Goodness Grows,” and their work shows. The farm boasts nearly 25 sheep, 750-800 chickens, 20-50 turkeys, a few pigs and almost 18-20 lambs during various parts of the year. Their services range from the creation of syrups and jellies to packaging meat and eggs. The couple even recommends scheduled tours of the property. At Evans Knob Farm, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.

As one of the first certified organic and naturally growing farms in West Virginia, their commitment to high-quality farming has persisted over the years. When other farmers discouraged Kathy from this model of agriculture, she replied, “[Just] watch me.”

Since then, the duo has proven time and again that an ethically sourced product isn’t in conflict with the development of a company. In her own words, “It can be done, and it can be done responsibly.”

Her calling is to care for the health and wellness of the customer. Whether for a college student or a retired couple, her commitment to providing excellent service has gone un-wavered.

As a founding member of the Morgantown Farmers Market, Kathy has been a firsthand witness to the rapid growth of farming over the last eight years. What once displayed only three vendors in the Morgantown area now boasts nearly 40 farmers and organizations within a 50-mile radius.

A true West Virginian, having a small hand in the success of farming in this region is one of Kathy’s greatest joys in life.
