One of the most captivating stories Jason shared with us was about Zackquill Morgan, the founder of Morgantown. Though Morgantown was his namesake, Morgan was originally buried at Prickett’s Fort, and in 1925, the city made an effort to have his body reinterred here. Despite their unsuccessful attempt, they did honor him with a massive monument at his grave. His original tombstone was preserved and can now be seen at the Morgantown History Museum—a tangible connection to the man who played such a vital role in establishing our town.
Reviving Forgotten Legacies: Monongahela Rye
Monongahela Rye played a crucial role in the economic growth of the area. It was easy to produce, as rye grew well in Monongalia County, and it didn’t spoil easily when transported in barrels. This led to a booming business, with barrels being floated down the Monongahela River to Pittsburgh for sale. Jason even mentioned that he has plans to reproduce the label from one of the original Monongahela Rye bottles that was found hidden inside a wall in South Park during a renovation. This artifact is now proudly displayed at the museum.
