Exploring Social Media and Branding with Mark Bland

Mark Bland’s journey into social media stardom wasn’t an overnight success—it was a mix of creativity, strategy, and a bit of luck. In a recent Positively West Virginia podcast episode, Mark shared insights into how he built his following, the impact of social media algorithms, and the mindset required to thrive in the digital landscape.

Breaking into the Social Media Industry

Mark candidly described how challenging it is to break into the social media industry. He emphasized that while skill plays a role, much of success depends on timing and luck. “The algorithm plays a huge role. If you put out a viral video and people like it, the algorithm knows to push more of your content. It’s a mix of skill and luck,” he explained. He recalled the early days of his success, watching his follower count climb by thousands each day, something that both surprised and excited him.

Adapting to Platform Changes and the TikTok Debate

Given his success on TikTok, Mark was asked about the ongoing debates surrounding the platform’s potential ban in the U.S. Instead of worrying, he took a pragmatic approach: “At first, it was disappointing, but I’ve learned it’s not about the platform—it’s about your brand. If TikTok disappeared, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Another avenue would emerge.” His perspective is grounded in experience, highlighting the importance of adaptability in digital media.

The Shift in Media Consumption

Mark also reflected on how media consumption has changed. “It used to be that if you wanted the weather, you’d go to the Weather Channel. If you wanted sports, you’d go to ESPN. Now, people turn to individual creators. My page is like someone’s TV channel.” This shift has opened up new opportunities for content creators to connect with audiences directly, bypassing traditional media gatekeepers.

Content Creation and the Algorithm’s Demands

When it comes to creating content, Mark doesn’t follow a rigid posting schedule. “The algorithm loves consistency, but my life isn’t set up for routine. I post when I have free time,” he shared. Despite this, he aims to post at least two videos a week. Interestingly, he noted that the videos he spends the least amount of time on tend to perform the best. “The ones I spend hours editing tend to flop, but the ones I create in 15 minutes go viral,” he said with a laugh.

Mark keeps a running list of content ideas and scripts them before filming. His most successful videos tend to focus on widely relatable topics, such as gas prices, rather than niche content that might only appeal to a smaller audience. “Anything that resonates with a broad audience tends to perform best,” he explained.

Staying Mindful of Content Boundaries

As an FBI employee, Mark is always mindful of his content. “I have to walk into work the next day, so I think twice before posting something controversial.” He likened it to the old advice about social media: “Don’t post anything your mother wouldn’t approve of.” This approach helps him maintain a responsible and positive online presence.

Unexpected Opportunities from Social Media

Since rising to prominence on social media, Mark has experienced a range of unexpected opportunities. While he didn’t share all the details, it’s clear that his online presence has opened doors beyond what he initially imagined.

Mark’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, adaptability, and authenticity in the ever-evolving world of digital media. Whether you’re an aspiring creator or a business owner looking to enhance your online presence, his journey offers valuable lessons in branding, content strategy, and staying true to your voice in an increasingly crowded digital space.
