Healthcare Management Solutions, LLC (HMS) is an exceptional business whose unique capabilities involve purposeful integration of clinical expertise with information technology (IT) solutions. These solutions are revered by HMS’ customers, as reflected in the CPARS evaluations that HMS has received. This blend of clinical and IT expertise allows HMS to touch the entire healthcare delivery lifecycle of its primary customer, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

  • 2:56-3:44: “We do a lot that has to do with healthcare and IT integration of solutions. Our primary customer is the Federal Government as well as we work directly with states. The biggest bulk of our work involves conducting healthcare facility inspections on-sight surveys.”

  • 4:02-5:23: Heimbach says that she and her partner at the time started the business because they had worked at many different places and entities and really wanted to make a positive impact on healthcare delivery. Heimbach went on to say, “We also wanted to create a culture in a company that was very family-friendly and that people felt valued and appreciated.”
  • 5:24-5:32: What’s the one thing you’re most excited for HMS right now?
  • 5:33-6:25: “It’s got to be the difference we’re making in so many people’s lives.”

  • 6:36-6:45: “We work in every state in U.S. territory.”

  • 7:10-8:06: Heimbach shares with Jim the struggle there was to receive financial backing when she was first starting HMS

  • 8:11-8:18: “Don’t give up. Don’t take no for an answer. And you’ll eventually find the doors to open or you’ll create those doors.”
  • 8:19-8:40: What would you say is the best thing about being in business here in the mountain state?
  • 8:41-9:09: “I’d have to say it’s having access to a really good workforce. Having people who have a good work ethic and really care about what they do.”

  • 9:24-14:36: “I would probably say it’s when we won our first federal contract.” Heimbach also mentions the award that HMS recently won which was the 8A graduate of the year award from the Small Business Association.

  • 15:16-15:57: “The long-term vision is to provide the great services that we do now, but we want to expand where we do that… Also, we’re looking to expand our state customer base as well.”
  • 15:58-16:17: What’re some of the hot-button issues that you’re seeing with regard to healthcare and healthcare management?
  • 16:18-17:08: “The challenge for us is trying to see how things end up shaking out with the change in administration. How regulations are impacted on how healthcare is delivered.”
  • 17:09-17:27: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to business owners and young entrepreneurs?
  • 17:28-18:15 “My piece of advice would be: find something you’re passionate about, do the research to make sure that there is a niche, and then work as hard as you can to pursue that passion.”
  • 18:16-18:35: How did you go about finding some of the mentors in your life?
  • 18:36-19:13: “We go to a lot of SBA sponsored events, there’s networking events they put on, where you just get the chance to talk to a lot of companies.”
  • 19:14-19:39: What’s one thing you do everyday that you think contributes to your success?
  • 19:40-21:09: “I would have to say keeping my staff is my number one priority. I work very hard to make sure they understand how much they’re valued and how important they are to the company.”
  • 21:10-21:53: What’s one resource you use in your business everyday that you can’t live without?
  • 21:54-22:29: “One of the things that I use day in and day out is Skype.” Heimbach mentions specifically the instant message tool.
  • 22:30-22:37: What’s one book you’d recommend to aspiring business people and entrepreneurs?
  • 22:38-24:23: “No doubt about it, it would be ‘Good to Great’ by Jim Collins.

  • 24:59-25:34: “I just hope people that are looking to going into business and starting their own company don’t give up. There are uphill battles, I would just advise them to step back, remember why they got into it and take things one step at a time.”
