SPARKZ: Powering the Future of Energy Independence in West Virginia

The small town of Bridgeport, West Virginia, is about to become a powerhouse of innovation and opportunity, thanks to SPARKZ—a cutting-edge company focused on creating critical materials for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Led by CEO Sanjiv Malhotra, SPARKZ is not just opening a facility; it’s creating a transformative ripple effect for West Virginia’s economy and the nation’s energy future.

SPARKZ’s work begins at the heart of the energy revolution: LFP batteries. Known for their safety, long lifespan, and versatility, these batteries are essential for electric vehicles, commercial equipment, and energy storage systems that power everything from homes to solar farms. While much of the U.S. battery industry depends on foreign imports, SPARKZ is taking a bold step to build a fully domestic, vertically integrated supply chain.

“We’re possibly the first company in the U.S. to fully integrate the manufacturing of critical materials for LFP batteries,” Malhotra explained. From sourcing lithium, iron, and phosphate domestically to producing value-added battery components, SPARKZ is committed to reducing reliance on international suppliers while driving innovation at home.

Why West Virginia?

Malhotra’s decision to bring SPARKZ to Bridgeport is both strategic and personal. Growing up in coal country in India, he witnessed the resilience and discipline of coal workers—traits that he believes are vital for the meticulous safety standards required in battery production.

“West Virginians are welcoming, hardworking people,” Malhotra shared. “The state has embraced us with open arms, and its history as an energy leader makes it the perfect place for SPARKZ to thrive.”

The facility itself is a revitalized former Asahi Glass Factory, a massive structure boasting nearly 500,000 square feet of space. With abundant power, rail connectivity, and room for growth, the site is ideal for SPARKZ’s operations.

A Catalyst for Economic Growth

SPARKZ’s investment in West Virginia extends beyond infrastructure. The company’s Bridgeport facility is expected to create approximately 125 jobs in its first phase, including 75 direct positions and 40–50 indirect jobs related to infrastructure upgrades. A second phase will add another 100 direct jobs, bringing the total to 200.

But the impact doesn’t stop there. SPARKZ aims to inspire a wave of economic development across the region. “When you have 200 families working here, restaurants and other businesses will emerge to support them,” Malhotra noted. “In our own little way, we hope to uplift Harrison County and encourage other companies to follow our lead into West Virginia.”

Building a Stronger Supply Chain

SPARKZ’s vision goes beyond creating jobs—it’s about reshaping the energy landscape. By controlling the supply chain for critical battery materials, SPARKZ is helping the U.S. achieve energy independence. The Bridgeport facility will serve as a feeder plant for the company’s new site in Sacramento, California, creating a seamless flow of raw materials across the country.

“West Virginia has been an extractive economy, providing energy for the entire nation,” Malhotra said. “It’s time to add the processing economy to that legacy. By processing materials for lithium batteries here, we create high-paying jobs and establish ourselves as a leader in the energy revolution.”

A Vision for the Future

SPARKZ is more than a company; it’s a movement. Malhotra envisions a future where the U.S. is a global superpower in lithium battery manufacturing, with West Virginia leading the charge.

“Energy independence isn’t just about harvesting resources—it’s about storing and processing that energy,” Malhotra emphasized. “By building the entire value chain here, we ensure control over our destiny and lay the groundwork for a sustainable, innovative future.”

Supporting the Workforce

Key to SPARKZ’s success is its partnership with the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). The company is working closely with UMWA to provide workforce development and training through career centers, ensuring that employees have opportunities to grow and advance.

“I’m passionate about retraining and upskilling our team,” Malhotra said. “We want every employee to see a clear career path and have the tools to achieve their goals.”

Conclusion

As SPARKZ prepares to launch operations in 2025, its impact is already being felt. By revitalizing a historic facility, creating jobs, and fostering innovation, SPARKZ is lighting the way for a brighter future in West Virginia and beyond.
