Max Hammer, founder and owner of Hammer Cyclesoperates a full-service bicycle shop in downtown White Sulphur Springs. Proud to call Greenbrier Valley his home, he offers a lifetime of expertise, honed on backcountry trails and racecourses, to the community he loves.

“White Sulphur Springs is being reborn,” said Max Hammer of Hammer Cycles.

With new businesses like Hammer’s bicycle shop, music festivals, restaurants and breweries coming to White Sulphur Springs, this once densely populated area is beginning to return to its former glory.

Hammer likens the small town’s revitalization project to a phoenix ascending from the ashes.

A transplant from Phoenix, Arizona, Hammer has always been a mountain man at heart. With each recreational journey to West Virginia, he remarked, “The mountains kept calling my name.”

Now, Hammer’s an “adopted son” of West Virginia and seeks to instill a similar affection for the Mountain State in others. He views the state as ripe for the picking, hoping to attract newcomers to the area and encourage more natives to stay.

Hammer has been riding a bike since he was a toddler and cycling regional trails since the ’80s. He has participated in several races, including the Dual Slalom, which took him to the 1990 World Championship. Furthermore, he has raced alongside some of the nation’s preeminent riders and on some of the most challenging terrain in the country.

In his downtime, Max serves as the head coach of the Greenbrier Valley Hellbenders Youth Mountain Bike Team.

Hammer’s most profound joy is seeing the smiles of his customers over the years as they graduate from beginner cycles to higher-grade bikes. In addition, he loves to see whole families begin and endure the journey of bicycling together.

With several trails nearby, like the Monongahela National Forest and Greenbrier River Trail, Hammer Cycles and White Sulphur Springs are ideally suited for the next boom in local business and community development.

Having moved from his garage to a small storefront and now a larger shop downtown, he is excited to expand their service offerings to the Greenbrier area.
